Abstract

Introduction: Pressure vest is usually used as a training intervention for the treatment of autistic children by medical experts. This article assessed the effect of pressure vest on attention and involuntary behaviors of children with autism.

Aim: The aim of this study is to expand the pressure vest therapy as a new non-invasive method to treat the autism spectrum disorder.

Material and Methods: Pressure vest have cells dilated to apply pressure to the body and an air compressor manually adjustable for proper functioning. It is needed to apply pressure in a different way to enter some dynamic pressure that has a characteristic rhythmic massage. In this study, we used a alternative treatment plan for five children with autism within seven days of seven weeks.at first the vest was worn to the baby and then a series of tasks and common games were performed. The Micro had three different programs to control valves of pressure vest.

Results: Children in most cases did the exercises and assignments with interest and had more patience. Assessing four main parameters including the focus, anger, learning and speaking in children indicates that at the end of the seven-weak course, the behavior of children has improved in the form of a reduction in the anger level and the improvement of speaking, learning and focus. The device had an acceptable performance in the prevention of sudden behaviors. The major advantage of these vests were increasing focus and concentration, enhancing comprehension and learning and reducing hyperactivity.

Early screening for autism using audio indicators

In this study, the differences between the pre-verbal speech characteristics of children with autism and other children and the role of these differences in the early diagnosis of the disorder have been studied. One of the hallmarks of this disorder, which has been reported in autistic children at an early age, is the presence of stretched and uniform sounds and screams unique to this group.

To fully and comprehensively examine the characteristics of children’s voices, a collection of 237 different features that are categorized into eight separate categories is extracted.

To implement an efficient classifier that can separate the voices of children with autism from those of other children, we need to use feature selection methods to remove features that are not accepted in the same two categories of values and do not create much separation. Due to the difficulty of collecting appropriate audio data from children under the age of four, reducing the size of the feature vector will help prevent bias.

Comparison of the three feature selection methods shows that perceptual features along with MFCC features are the best features for separating the collecting data. Also, three different methods have been used to classify the data, each with different strengths and weaknesses.

The design and evaluation of the parameters of these classifiers are based on data from four healthy children and five children with the disorder and using the selected features, and in the best design, it leads to the correct classification rate of about 97%.

Humanoid robots to improve the social and cognitive skills of children with autism

One of the ongoing research projects in the country with the cooperation of Sharif University, Shahid Beheshti University of Technology and also the Center for Organizing Treatment and Rehabilitation of Autistic disorders, using two humanoid robots with the names of Nima and Mina as assistant therapists in improving social and cognitive skills of children with autism.

To this end, a variety of educational and therapeutic scenarios and games have been designed that have been implemented in more than 10 sessions of clinical intervention on boys with autism. The results show the improvement and persistence of social and cognitive skills of high level of high performance children; it has also been shown to reduce maladaptive behaviors and autism traits in children with low performance. It is hoped that the results of these efforts will make the treatment process of these patients in the country faster and more efficient and reduce the costs imposed on the society.
